Start is 13 September in Mexican Hat. Map labels no longer overlap. Official extras stay bright blue. Overnight plan is hotel / camp / hotel / camp, then hotels so you are not on a 9,000-foot lake in mid-September. Official BDR camps have Google Maps, Organic Maps, and homepage links.

02Where you sleep — hotel, camp, hotel, camp, then hotels

Skip a 46° night if the forecast says so

Plan is hotel / camp / hotel / camp, then hotels. That breaks at Night 4 and Night 5 on purpose. Fruitland has no hotel, and the official BDR camps around Bald Mountain Pass (Trial Lake, Washington Lake, Mirror Lake, Whitney Reservoir) sit at 9,000–9,800 feet. You start 13 September. Mid-September lows in the desert towns are usually the low 50s. The Uinta lake camps at 9,000–9,800 feet can still drop into the 30s and 40s that week. If the forecast low is near 46°F or below, take a room.

05Official extras and harder alternates

All of these are in the official March 2026 GPX. They are drawn on both maps at the top. Blue extras add miles onto the main line. Red alts replace part of a day or add hard work. Use them if both of you are fresh and the dirt is dry. The Africa Twin will feel the expert sections more than the Ibex.

Official expert alternate to part of UT2. 78 miles in this GPX. BDR says go with a group, full crash protection, as much water as you can carry. Needles Outpost is the supply point on that line. If you ride it, Day 2 becomes Lockhart plus a short finish into Moab — you do not also ride the full main-line Abajo / Geyser day.

If the day is going well

Day 1: Muley Point. Day 4: Wedge and/or Buckhorn. Day 5: Heber Mountain if the sky is clear. Those three extras together are about 3–4 extra hours, not another day.

06Before you leave

Book Blanding, Moab, and Evanston. Mexican Hat is done. Night 4 is camp or an off-route room.

Leave Lockhart and UT7 visible in the GPS only if you plan to use them.
